Some couples instantly make you feel like you’ve known them for years.
Brooke and Alec were those people. They laughed easily. Conversation never stopped. Within minutes, it felt less like a photoshoot and more like spending the afternoon with friends. Every new backdrop gave them another reason to smile, tease each other, and simply enjoy the day.

They met while serving in the military. Between deployments, moves, and long stretches of long-distance, they built a relationship that had to be intentional. Spending an afternoon with them today, though, you’d never guess any of that. Their relationship feels effortless. Comfortable. Full of joy.

We began beneath the trees at the Collingwood Arboretum. Brooke and Alec wandered the trails, caught up with each other, laughed about something only the two of them knew, and before long, it was easy to forget we were carrying cameras at all.
Later, the landscape opened up around Living Water Resort. Bear Estate gave us sweeping views across Georgian Bay, while Atoka House overlooked Cranberry Golf Course with the Niagara Escarpment stretching across the horizon. Every stop added something different to the gallery without ever taking the attention away from what mattered most.
The scenery was beautiful, but it was never the focus.
Brooke and Alec weren’t worried about getting every pose exactly right. They trusted the process, stayed present with each other, and let the afternoon unfold naturally. That’s usually when the best photographs happen.
Planning Your Own Outdoor Engagement Session
Outdoor engagement sessions are surprisingly low maintenance, but after photographing quite a few of them, we’ve learned there are a handful of things that make the afternoon a whole lot easier.
Here’s what we’d throw in the car before heading out:
- Hairspray, touch-up makeup, and any hair tools you might need.
- Bug spray and sunscreen, especially during the warmer months.
- Comfortable shoes for walking between locations, even if you’ll change into dress shoes for your photos.
- A second outfit, just in case you’d like a different look or something unexpected happens.
- A backpack. It beats carrying six loose things across a trail.
- Water and snacks. Keep everyone happy, hydrated, and not hangry.
Most couples never end up needing some of the things they pack. But when you do, you’ll be glad they’re there. A little preparation means fewer distractions and more time enjoying the experience.
Brooke and Alec are a perfect example of that. They embraced whatever the afternoon brought, focused on each other, and let the rest take care of itself. Their gallery reflects exactly how the session felt: relaxed, genuine, and full of laughter.
Looking Ahead to the Wedding Day
This engagement session is only the beginning of Brooke and Alec’s story.
We’ll be seeing them again this Thanksgiving weekend for their rooftop wedding at Living Water Resort overlooking Georgian Bay, and we’re already looking forward to it.
By the wedding day, we won’t be strangers holding cameras anymore.
We’ll already know when they’re laughing because something funny happened and when they’re laughing because they’re feeling a few wedding-day nerves. We’ll know when to step in with a little guidance and when to quietly disappear for a few minutes while they soak it all in. That familiarity makes a difference. It means less time thinking about the photographs and more time living the day.
Years from now, Brooke and Alec probably won’t remember what prompt we gave them or exactly where we asked them to stand.
They’ll remember laughing their way around Collingwood together. That’s the part that lasts.
